The Vibrancy of Nature

White clouds drift like floating boats,

The fallen feathers of seagulls,

The offerings of wild Bhat flowers,

And the sorrow of fallen Shiuli blossoms.

Silver moonlight spreads over the Akanda bushes,

Golden glimmers touch the bowed heads of ripened rice,

And autumn arrives with its enchanting fragrance.

Grasshoppers leap and keep their watch,

Dewdrops sparkle like pearls on the lips of green grass.

A mermaid appears mysteriously in the pond,

Transcending her own boundaries,

Only to be captured in the beaks of kingfishers.

The gentle breeze, painted with the hues of mustard flowers,

Carries the graceful smile

Of soft, flowing, milky-white water lilies.

I once thought I would never write poetry.

This heart grew older in the villages.

Almost all my ancestors were farmers,

Yet my exile rests in the luxuries of the city.

So I shall not write poetry;

Let poetry remain in the melodious twilight

Of birds singing in their leafy bowers.

The intoxicating fragrance of paddy,

Finely ground rice, the rhythmic sound of the dheki,

Date-palm molasses pudding and traditional patishapta cakes.

Let poetry remain

On the contented, smiling face of a village bride,

Like a veil resting upon her bun of damp hair.

The effort of giving birth to poetry through emotion

Let it become the graceful tradition of Bengali autumn.

Let poetry be the blue clouds

Leaning against autumn's shoulder,

The endless hours in the open courtyard

Where harvested paddy is threshed.

Here, at the turning of the seasons,

Nature unveils her wondrous diversity.

Here, like tiny flakes of frost, comes the mist,

Bringing moonlight as if it were a precious purchase,

And telling stories of mice

Across the barren fields after the harvest.

Let poetry remain as Rupama,

In the slippery green of tender banana leaves.

In the ever-new delight

Of sparrows and mynas.

Let poetry remain in the farmer's smile,

In the shepherd's flute,

Upon the rural soil along the River Jamuna,

In the vibrant, ever-moving spirit of nature.
